Extend your service

The hair extensions market is constantly evolving, with ranges available to suit every client and hair type. We asked some industry professionals how this service can boost your salon business, and the key points to consider in order to keep clients coming back

Do your research

“The hair extensions market is growing year-on-year. We are always attracting new clients for them; and then once trust is established, they come to the salon for all our other services.

“The more transformations we showcase on our social platforms, the more people are interested. Social media is a huge driving tool, and is playing a big part now in the hairdressing industry as a whole.

“There is a preconception that hair extensions are only for younger clients, but this isn’t true. We have clients ranging from 18 to 80, who all want hair extensions for different reasons. Some want added length that only hair extensions can create, others are looking for subtle thickness and volume, or additional colour effects. Vivid colours are featuring a lot more now in Ireland. Balayage trends are still very much prevalent, but vivid colour trends are emerging.

“Any salon that’s considering introducing a hair extension service should do plenty of research. Make sure to choose the right brand to suit client needs. The quality of the hair is very important. We use only Great Lengths extensions as they are long-lasting and have a natural, discreet look.”

Remember your application

 HAIRDREAMS

“Hair extensions can help to grow your salon business in a number of ways. Once a client tries them out, they generally keep them in for a few years, so they become one of your regulars. If the client is new, they will probably start getting their colour done with you as well. In addition, all extensions clients buy retail.

“When it comes to current trends, I think length is out and thickness is in. Most clients are getting extensions to enhance their own natural hair, rather than opting for a complete change. Obviously, you need to use good quality hair, but the application is also very important. A bad application can cause damage to the natural hair, no matter how good quality the extensions are.

“I’ve worked with many great brands and methods, from Great Lengths to Balmain. In my salon, we use two different brands of keratin bonds, mainly my own Refine range, which I source directly from Russia. We also use Platinum upon request, which is a fantastic, well-known Irish brand.”

Discuss options with clients

“Hair extensions are one of the most sought-after services in the industry, so a salon not offering them is missing out. The sector is growing on an annual basis; we’ve been operating for eight years and the demand for hair extensions has only ever increased. They are suitable for all clients; whether someone is looking for length, to fill out some finer areas, or just for a one-off occasion, there is an extension to match every hair type and lifestyle.

“Consultations with new clients should include some key questions. It’s important to find out what their desired outcome is, and to then discuss the different options available to achieve that.

“The market currently has something for everyone. The opportunities for salons are endless because they can now offer such a variety of hair extension options to clients, from permanent to non-permanent. Online sales are huge now as well, especially with non-permanent extensions.”

Sarah Miller, owner, Heavenly Hair

Protect clients natural hair

“With hair extensions, there are plenty of options to improve any hair type. This could be adding a few on the sides, where a client feels they need them most, or adding both length and extra volume that is achievable and maintainable, and doesn’t damage their natural hair.

“The consultation is key. I always give clients extensions options that would work for them, and would also protect their natural hair while wearing them. For me, and for any stylist using the Gold Fever brand, protecting the client’s natural hair is our number-one priority.

“I make it very clear to clients that the hair extensions will be an investment in so many positive ways. By wearing them, a client will get longer out of a blow-dry, which means less styling to the natural hair. Our extensions can last anything between three and six months, with some clients only needing two sets a year.

“The maintenance is actually easier than for natural hair, and a client can achieve more styles. With hair extensions, it’s always a good hair day no matter how much or little time the client has, or what style they want.”

Ceira Lambert, head educator, Gold Fever

Give clients an aftercare guide

“Hair extensions are extremely beneficial to a salon’s business as they generate extra revenue in terms of service and essential aftercare products. They are so popular now that a salon may gain clients by adding this service.

“Consultation is a crucial part of the process; this is when the client receives their professional colour match and the stylist recommends an application method based on their lifestyle, preferences, hair type and what look they are hoping to achieve. Aftercare is then discussed – our clients receive an aftercare guide ahead of the application. Extensions are a commitment and aftercare is the essential element to ensuring longevity of the extensions.

“The quality of hair and the application are important as a combination of both ensures the client enjoys many months of their hair extensions. An expert application is essential to minimising damage at the application and removal phase, while high-quality hair gives the client a luxurious experience.

“The market is constantly changing, with new methods, products and shades emerging in recent years. Extensions now cater to every age group, hair type and preference – the options are endless.”
