Ready for LIFT OFF

The lash lift has been enjoying a rise in popularity since salons reopened after lockdown. We asked some beauty professionals what is involved in this treatment, and why having it on your service menu benefits both your business and clients

1 All natural

A bit like an eyelash perm, a lash lift works to lift, curl and define lashes using a non-toxic chemical. “One of the many advantages to this treatment is that it enhances the client’s natural lashes,” says Rasa Levinaite, owner of The Wicklow Street Clinic in Dublin. “In our clinic we offer the LVL Lash Lift by Nouveau Lashes.

The LVL stands for ‘length, volume and lift’, and the treatment combines both an eyelash perm and tint. We work with the natural lash to enhance the eye area.

The result is curled lashes that open the eyes beautifully, making them look bigger, and saving the client time on arduous curling. It’s an amazing alternative to lash extensions.”

“Lash extensions are all about volume and drama, but the lash lift is great for clients who prefer a more natural look,” says Noreen O’Connor, owner of Wax Central in Cork. “Because the treatment works with the client’s own lashes, the result is always very natural.”

2 Mass appeal and suitability

Lash lifting is designed for almost every lash length and thickness. “The vast majority of clients are suitable candidates for a lash lift,” says Suzanne Egan, owner of the Suzanne Egan Academy in Dublin. “And it’s appealing for a variety of reasons and occasions. Some choose to have this treatment before a big event, such as a wedding, party or a holiday. Others have it done regularly so they can maintain perfectly lifted lashes all year round. The lash lift is also an attractive option for older clients, who might not like having lash extensions applied. As a treatment, it is more flexible than extensions, which require a strict commitment. There is minimal maintenance involved with a lash lift.”

“Busy clients love the lash lift, especially busy mums,” says O’Connor. “Having a service that doesn't require maintenance appointments or any kind of removal is a big bonus for clients who are already pressed for time.”

“It’s also an ideal treatment for those with straight lashes or who don’t like wearing mascara,” says Levinaite. “Since lockdown, we’ve seen an increase in demand for the LVL among a wide range of clients. Thanks to face masks, it’s still all about the eyes at the moment.”

3 Speed and efficiency

A lash lift is a straightforward, easy and enjoyable treatment, which should take no more than an hour to complete, according to Egan. “Lash extensions usually take at least two hours, so in the length of time it takes to do extensions, you could have two lash lifts done. You can also do a brow lamination at the same time, so your business benefits from a dual treatment.”

“For safety reasons, the therapist must stay in the room with the client for the duration of the treatment, so cannot take other appointments during this time,” says Dympna Coyne general manager of Bellissimo Galway. “But there are upselling opportunities here as most clients will opt to add on an eyebrow tint and shape, so the therapist can use the time to do this.”

“Lash Botox is another additional treatment that can also be done along side the lash lift,” says Egan. “This is a hydrolysed keratin mask that strengthens and nourishes the natural lashes with argan oil, proteins and vitamins. It fills the lashes with keratin, making them thicker, fuller, longer and stronger.”

4 Added relaxation

“From a client perspective, not only do they get an amazing result, but the treatment also offers them an hour of relaxation,” says O’Connor. “You can even offer them a head or hand massage during the hour you are waiting for the lift and fix lotions to do their work.”

“Because the client is required to have their eyes closed for the entire process, they find it incredibly relaxing,” says Egan.” It gives them an opportunity to switch off – some of my clients have even fallen asleep while having a lash lift.”

5 Client loyalty

“Once clients see how good their lashes can look with this service, they become regulars,” says O’Connor. “In fact, I’ve had to stop them from booking in too soon – remember, there needs to be at least six weeks between treatments to avoid over-processing the client’s natural lashes.”

“It’s been great for business in our salon as it brings clients back on a regular basis; they tend to rebook their next lash lift appointment after each treatment,” says Coyne. “It also attracts new clients, particularly through word of mouth as our clients get compliments about their lashes.”

“Clients love the results, and not only will they come back after the recommended six to eight weeks to have their lash lift redone, they will also come back for a tint refresh halfway through this time period,” says Egan.

6 Retail opportunities

After a lash lift, you can recommend different products to clients to help them keep their lashes in good condition and prevent any dryness. “We advise our clients to use an aftercare product such as the Lashus Brow & Lash Elixir, which will help the lashes remain healthy,” says Coyne. “This nourishes the lashes from the inside out and will help repair damaged follicles, hydrate and promote lash growth and regeneration, while also maintaining the health and strength of the lash.”

“We would always recommend a lash serum,” says Levinaite. “This will keep the lashes hydrated, while prolonging the results of the treatment.”

“I also advise clients to use lash serum,” says Egan. “I sell Grande products, including the serum, which lasts three months and works really well. I also recommend primer and a good mascara if they want to add more length to the lash lift.”

PROFESSIONAL TIPS

■ “Always ensure a patch test is carried out on a new client, even if they’ve had a lash lift done previously in another salon,” says Coyne. “We don’t recommend anyone with sensitive eyes to get this treatment because if their eyes start to water during it, this could cause the perm to either curl too much or go too straight.

Also, ask the client to come in with no eye make-up or mascara on to get the best results.”

■ “Make sure to tell the client to keep their lashes dry for 48 hours following the treatment,” advises Levinaite. “If they get wet too soon, it can undo the results of the treatment in a matter of seconds.”

■ “When selecting the shield, aim to have the lashes reach three-quarters up the length of it,” suggests Egan. “I measure the shield when my client is with me for a patch test in order to save me time on the day. Apply the shield flush to the lash line, and make sure to add a little extra glue to both ends to keep it secure. Try downsizing the shield for a more dramatic look.”

■ “Make sure your shields are as close to the lash line as possible – any bit of a gap at all will mean the curl will not be at the root of the lash, and you won't get the lift that you are hoping for,” says O’Connor. “It is also a good idea to have some pre-made hammocks ready in case your client has stubborn lashes that ping back off the shield midservice. To make a hammock, take a small piece of micropore tape (about the length of the eye) and stick it down to a longer piece. Place them sticky side to sticky side, as this will leave you with a non-sticky section in the centre. Use the tape to hold back stubborn lashes if they pop off mid-treatment, ensuring you always get a great lift.”
