GLOW GETTER

Dr Jennifer Owens is the owner of The Glow Clinic, which has branches in Dublin and Cork. A qualified dentist, aesthetic medicine practitioner and make-up artist, she recently became a certified yoga teacher

What's your earliest memory?

I remember being flower girl at a family wedding and wearing what I thought was a princess dress.

Who or what is your biggest inspiration?

Dr Jean Carruthers. I was lucky enough to train with her last year. She's nearing 80, still working full time and one of the most dynamic, positive people I have every met.

What was your first job?

I was a hockey coach to young kids. They were only four and five years old. I have always loved hockey and it was so amazing to be able to teach it and share that passion with them. I think team sports are great for young kids.

Ideal holiday destination? Anywhere that is warm and by the sea, with a good book. I rarely get to take a trip that isn't to do with work, so any holiday that lets me sit down and just read my book is the perfect one for me. I am originally from Cork and spent some time there this summer. With good weather and no work distractions, it felt like I had travelled far away from the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life!

Favourite food?

Cheeseburgers. I didn't eat meat for a very long time, but now cheeseburgers are my favourite go-to meal!

Favourite drink?

Champagne or hot chocolate. I drink just water most days, but I do love to treat myself to a glass of bubbles when celebrating, and a hot chocolate during the winter to warm up!

How do you relax?

I do different things, such as yoga, running or reading, and I try my best to spend one day a week with my phone on ‘do not disturb’ to make sure I am relaxing as much as I can. I've also joined a running club, which motivates me to focus on just running and the people around me for those couple of hours a week.

What was the last great film or series you watched?

I think The Wire still beats everything, but I also loved the latest season of Bridgerton.

Dream dinner party guest/guests (alive or dead)?

I would invite my family and close friends because I could always do with more time with them. My family are very good to me – when I recently opened my clinic in Cork, my parents were such a great help. My aunt Avril also does some work there. I am very close to all my family, but you can never spend enough time with them and I always think a dinner party is such a nice, intimate setting for a catch-up.

Do you cook and, if so, do you have a signature recipe?

When I have the time, yes I do cook. That said, there are more frozen dinners in my life than I’d care to admit to. If I'm having guests, I do a nice cacio e pepe.

Best piece of advice you've ever received?

You teach people how to treat you. I believe too that you have to treat others with kindness and fairness, as you never know what someone is going through.

Best piece of advice you've ever given?

Wear an SPF50 on a daily basis. You will never not hear me talk about the need for SPF every day – even in winter!

Have you changed the way you run your business/work since the pandemic?

Yes, I have. The advent of online consultations now allows me to manage the two clinics more easily, and this also means that I can patients clients both around Ireland and overseas.

Favourite thing about yourself?

I like my ability to be patient.

What's the one beauty product you can't live without?

A really good sunscreen. And after that, I would have to say mascara.

What, if anything, would you now tell your 16-year-old self?

People will love you and people will hate you. And none of it is anything to do with you!

How would you like to be remembered?

As someone whose friends and family could always count on when they needed me.
