MAKING HIS MARK
A stylist, colour specialist and educator with Zeba in Dublin, Mark Sherwood won the L’Oréal Colour Trophy in 2023, and came second in 2024
What’s your earliest memory?
I remember being in school and getting my hands on some modelling clay. I was completely absorbed, shaping it into different forms. I was fascinated by the endless possibilities. It was probably the first time I felt that spark of creativity.
Who or what is your biggest inspiration?
My biggest inspiration comes from the creativity and passion in the hair industry itself. I admire many stylists and colourists who aren’t afraid to experiment. I love Grace Dalgeish and Sofia Geideby.
What was your first job?
It was in my parents’ pub. It taught me a lot about work ethic and customer service. My first hairdressing job was in a high-end salon in Dublin. From my first day, I knew it was the industry I wanted to be in. Even when I was just sweeping floors, the buzz was electric, and I was hooked.
Ideal holiday?
I’m just back from India. It had the perfect mix of culture, things to do and incredible beaches. And the food was to die for!
Favourite food?
I’m a big fan of Italian food – especially a good pasta dish with fresh ingredients.
Favourite drink?
Lucozade. If anyone knows me, they know!
How do you relax?
I take long walks with my dogs, listen to music or audiobooks, and spend time with friends and family. I also enjoy browsing through art or fashion books for inspiration.
What was the last great film or series you watched?
The Bear. It’s set in a restaurant in Chicago and the intensity, passion and creativity in the kitchen reminded me of the artistry in a salon.
‘I’m always looking for ways to push myself creatively,
whether it’s through innovative colour work or mastering a new technique’
Dream dinner party guest/guests (alive or dead)?
Kanye West, Alexander McQueen and Rick Owens – people who are real and unapologetically themselves, no matter what the outcome.
Do you cook and, if so, do you have a signature recipe?
I enjoy cooking and I’ve learned a lot from my dad, who is a chef. My signature dish is probably a hearty, comforting bolognese.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Always be open to learning. This has helped me continue to grow, both as a hairdresser and as a person.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever given?
Trust the process. Hair transformations can take time, and I always remind clients that the journey is worth it.
Have you changed the way you work or run your business since the pandemic?
Definitely. The pandemic made me realise the importance of adaptability and building strong client relationships. I also picked up a job in retail during the lockdowns, and it really reinforced that hair was my passion, and lit a fire under me to take every opportunity as it comes.
Favourite thing about yourself?
My creativity and my drive. I’m always looking for ways to push myself creatively, whether it’s through innovative colour work or mastering a new technique.
What’s the one hair product you can’t live without?
A good leave-in conditioner. L’Oréal Professionnel Paris Vitamino Color 10-in-1 never leaves my side in the salon.
What, if anything, would you now tell your 16-year-old self?
Be bold and follow your passion. Back then, I had no idea where this career would take me, but trusting in my love for hair and style has opened so many doors.
How would you like to be remembered?
As someone who made people feel confident and empowered, and brought out the best in both my colleagues and clients through my work.
